In July of 1952, Mr. & Mrs. Otto Schmitt purchased Big Store Shoes and started their business with the help of their son, Marvin. Unfortunately, a major fire destroyed the building in 1957. With the kind heart of Emma Reid, the business operated out of a business she owned on Second St .until Schmitt's™ Shoes was relocated here in the spring of 1958.
In 1977 the store expanded into what was the Grill Restaurant and now carried women's™ apparel. When space became available at the old Gambles Hardware Store, the clothing department was moved up the street and the shoe store expanded into the former Downtown Apparel. In 1991 the shoe store expanded a third time into the Nichols Drug Store building. It was at that time that athletic wear was added along with an expansion of the shoe department.
Throughout the more than 40 years of physical changes and moves, there has been the same family involved in keeping the doors open. The eldest, Otto, was assisted by his son Marvin. For many years Otto's™ wife, Hyacinth, kept the books in order. The third generation entered the business in 1984, when John Schmitt returned to Reedsburg after college.
Spanning the years and the changing consumer market, Schmitt's™ Shoes continues to operate in the manner in which it originated, as a family shoe store serving a rural community, just as it began in 1952.
